Swiss D League Champions of 2012

What a year we have had. From a couple of years ago where we struggled, to handing out some real thumpings lately. Recently we beat Bern II 60-14 and Schaffhausen 70-8. If you want to see all the results check out http://en.suisserugby.com/resultats_classements/1LE/2

Which leaves us Champions of our League with one more game to go. Fantastic.

If you want to have a run next season certainly the Baar team is one that is on the way up. Touch wood we will continue this winning streak next year.

80-0 Baar vs Zug Bombers – 24th Sept, 2011

Baar is coming of age, with two great wins for the new season. Two weeks ago it was a hard fought win against RU Zurich, 25-14, with the forwards taking the ball up and busting through their line. Our rucks were solid and we could really plan our attacks.

At the end of the day we went over the line 4 times, and the bad guys twice. It was a good game which set the tone for what was to come next.

On the 24th the Panthers again took to the field against a local club, the Zug Bombers. All the hard work that had gone on before was on display for this day. Everyone knew what to do, and did it. At the end the Panthers scored 14 unanswered tries for a final score of 80. Only a couple of times did the Bombers come close to scoring but were always denied with big hits in the tackles.

Scores like this only come from hard work, knowing the game of rugby, and what and how to train. What was awesome to see was the back line passing the ball from one side of the field to the other, and back again. Beautiful to watch and great rugby. The score says it all.

Hard Fought Win Againt Eschen-Mauren

On 2nd Oct the team ran out at home against Eschen-Mauren, who has mostly beaten us in the past. And this time they certainly wanted to repeat the dose.

However, the Baar team has improved in terms of fitness, performance and toughness. And wanted to get up and put a win on the board.

At full time the final score was 38 -35 to the good guys, both sides running in five tries. The difference was Juan scoring two superb drop goals, leaving Eschen to cope with the fact Baar is no longer a guaranteed win for them. And in the future as the team continues to grow in strength and numbers it will only be harder and harder for them to score against us.

Good hard, fought win. Congratulations to the entire team.

No Training Until August

The season had ended. Everyone had a great time over the last year, and the team really impoved. A 14-17 result against Ticino really shows we can be competive. As for the Wintethur result, not much you can do against a really experienced and fast Fijian and NZr.

See you all next seaons, and enjoy summer.

Making Progress – 15 all draw vs Bern II

Last Saturday, 15 May, Baar went out against the Bern 2nd team. At the end of the rumble the scores were level at a respectable 15 all draw. Everyone felt good about the result and came off the field smiling.

The tackling was good and hard, and stopped their much bigger forwards running through us, and the backs played intelligently, kicking into open space a lot of the game. Both Cyril and Corren scored very intelligent tries. Corren kicked the points.

This showed the team has really matured over the last year or so. Structurally we are now far better organised and can hold our own, and can challenge superiour teams. Sure, there are some things we could do better. But this shows how far we have come, and that now we play as a team rather than individuals.

Good effort all round, and good result.

Perspective from a rugby wife

Well that’s all dandy, all this roughing and toughing – or should I say – rucking and tackling? It must be pure testosterone rushing through the players’ veins as the impact of a tackle hits them and causes yet another bruise, cut, tear or what have you. “How can he do this to himself?” I cringe.

Having been a rugby wife – or sometimes widow – for many years, I can tell a tale of (minor) injuries that have adorned the face and body of my dear husband. And how relieved I am at the end of every game that nothing major has happened to him. I remember the Sunday trip to the surgery where I had to help stitch up a cut on this face, or the time when I took him to a the doctor’s and having to answer his phone while the he was having yet another cut stitched up on my dear hubby’s face. But that’s about as bad as it gets, really. Rugby isn’t as bad as it looks – and it sure is a hell of a lot of fun for the guys playing it. Maybe that’s something us women will never be able to understand. But then again , we d0n’t have to.

Match Report – friendly vs Zurich mixed, April 10

Well, what a game. We had fun. The Zurich mixed team had fun. Rugby was the winner.

We had a friendly on the Sat, 10 April, against a Zurich mixed team. The final score was 5-17 to the bad guys.

But there is no question that the Baar Panthers team is getting better all the time and, perhaps, the newbie Swiss players don’t need to learn that much from the old ex-pat players of Steve Mac and Chris now.

The whole game Markus, Simon and Cyril, three Swiss guys who hadn’t touched a ball until a couple of years ago, were tearing holes in the opposition, moving the ball up, busting through and causing havoc in their line. Of course Breon and Ian were there too, lending their Brit experience.

Poor Steve, Chris and Ron, all in their forties, were trying to keep up. But, hey, chasing teenagers is hard work for the grey-hair brigade.

The wonderful things that came out of this game were the rucks, and the running and the passing. Many times we busted through their line and pushed them back thirty, forty and fifty meters.

Unfortunately there were moments that showed our lack of experience as a team. There were at least three or four times where if we had made one more pass we would have scored. Alas people got excited, went for the line themselves, got tackled, and the moment was lost.

But the great thing about this was many players were aware of these lost moments without anyone being told. All the players in Baar are really learning the game.

A “special mention” has to go to Breon and Simon for the lineouts. The timing was perfect on the throws and we got lots of ball. There is no doubt the line outs are working really, really well now.

So what to take away from this friendly with Zurich? First, it was tons of fun. Second, the Zurich team was half their 2nds team and half beginners. Considering the score ended up 5-17 to the bad guys, it really shows we are building a fantastic foundation for the future. This is a very respectable score especially considering we were the first to draw blood.

The Baar Panthers continue to get better all the time. The biggest difference was that, perhaps for the first time, we played as a team. A bit more of this and the flood of tries will come.

The highlight of the game was when Sibylle told Chris to put his shirt on at the end of the game. She certainly didn’t tell the Zurich teenagers with rippling muscles and six-packs to put theirs back on.

Points went to;
3 to Cyril for his amazing game in a new position
2 to Breon for his jumping in the line-outs
2 to Simon who did his usual bashing of anyone in front of him, and his line-out throws
2 to Markus who made tons of runs through the opposition forwards and for his awesome try
2 to Ian who worked really well with Cyril in the centers (it would have been 3 if he had passed the ball)

Welcome to our new website

Welcome to the “new look” Baar Panthers Rugby Club website.

It is pretty much the same as before except this time it has a new and exciting “blog” attached to it with the great functionality of WordPress. Yah.

What this means is there will be lots more news and content in the future; match reports, developments within the club, players calling the coaching staff rude names, other clubs calling us rude names, and, hopefully, us talking about the last great spanking we handed out to yet another defeated club (rather than saying why we got thumped. Sniff).

You can sign up as a contributor and write away like mad. However, all comments and postings will be held for approval before being published. But so long as the swearing is kept to a miniumum, pretty much everything will go up.

Enjoy.

From Chris Coach.
